Latest Pics and RSS Feeds!

First an email that I sent to the family recently…

I don’t know when, but sometime in the past couple weeks, Andrew added some more pictures to his photo album (outdated link went here…). I’m sure that he alerted some of you, but I however was unaware of the changes, so I added a feature to the photo albums… RSS feeds.

RSS is a way to aggregate updates from websites without having to actually go to all those websites yourself (to see what’s changed or been added). About a year ago I sent out an email to a couple of people that I thought would appreciate it, a quick note telling them how to show “quick hits” from inside gmail. This wasn’t a very good feature as it would only show 1 link at a time and in a somewhat random order. A good RSS reader looks more like a regular email interface (it can show you what you’ve read, you can organize them, etc.). I’ve since tried several other options but my favorite is google reader. (I’m trying not to deviate from the topic, but I feel you will be better people by knowing that you can even label your favorite links from inside the reader and then share those as RSS feeds for your friends…)

To finish quickly, the new firefox 2.0 has a bunch of integration features with various RSS feed aggregators and google reader is one. Pick a RSS tool, add your subscriptions, including this one for andrew’s albums: Andrew’s RSS

The final step is to simply check back at your reader every so often to see what’s happened. If anyone has any questions or wants further information, don’t feel bad to call me or whatever, this is my hobby and I enjoy spreading knowledge.

RSS is good because sometimes I’ll update the pictures by putting new ones in older directories just to keep people on their toes, and they’ll miss out on seeing my cute kids.

And finally the latest pics…
