Boys, Toys, and Brotherly Love

We’ve all been enjoying a few new toys around here. Mom finally got a new laptop. Until now – I’d been using the old desktop Brent built in college. Which makes the computer about 8 years old – kind of a dinosaur nowadays. But man – I never minded, because the thing ran like a champ! (A testament to my husband’s extreme and awesome nerdy skills.) The only reason I switched over is because we’ll have to get rid of our “office” to make room for the new baby, so I needed to be able to float. My only criteria for the new laptop (which Brent mocks incessantly) is that it be preferably white, possibly silver, sleek, and “pretty.” What do I need to worry about technical stuff for when I have Brent around? Anyways – you’d be surprised how hard it was to find a match that wasn’t crazy expensive. But we stumbled on a beautiful white Sony that was on sale a few weeks ago and so I didn’t hesitate to snatch it right up, and at the same time demand a gorgeous Liz Claiborne laptop bag that WAS NOT on sale, to go with it. I know Brent thought it was kind of ridiculous – but I love him cuz he let me get it anyways. 🙂 Thank you dearest husband!

Brent is having fun with his new toy – a Canon DSLR. He saved up for a long time in order to invest in a fancy camera, and is now keeping himself busy learning how to use it. All I know is that it is HEAVY, HUGE, and has way more buttons and gadgets than I could ever handle. In fact, I doubt I will ever take a picture with it – for fear I would drop it, dent it, or do something equally horrible and damaging to my marriage.

Danny also just scored an early birthday present from his Great Grandma and Grandpa Finlayson. As soon as he tore into the wrapping paper I knew we were in trouble. It was some sort of ultra cool Star Wars spaceship and the first response we heard was Jake – who said – “That’s all I’ve ever wanted!!” Uh-oh. It was only about 3 minutes later that Jake was in tears over the fact that Danny still hadn’t let him have a turn. Birthdays are so hard for little kids! Only one person gets presents…. Christmas runs much smoother, if you ask me. Santa basically brings two of everything. Thank goodness Danny is a champion sharer and worships his big brother. With only a few exceptions, they’ve been happily taking turns flying the spaceship all weekend. Hooray for brotherly love!

More about brothers and love. I can’t tell people enough how glad I am that Jake and Danny have each other. They truly are best friends – and seeing them together has seriously brought me more joy as a mother than anything else. I’m not saying they never fight – but overall they really get along. They have so much fun just being boys together!! And watching them pretend to “battle” with imaginary super powers and transform into monsters that crush the earth is about the coolest thing ever. I need to secretly tape record some of their conversations – they can pretend like nobody’s business!

I just hope they stay close as they get older, and that Jake sets a good example for his younger brother. Enjoy the slew of cute bonding pictures, thanks to Brent fiddling with his new camera. You can see more here in our September album.

SIGH. 🙂 I love my boys. Having a third really wouldn’t be so bad.

Hopefully one day my girls will love eachother. Right now I would say they fight more than not but when they play good together I too like to hear all of the fun stuff they come up with…although instead of laser fights it is playing doggie or dollie and mommie.
