Don’t Blink

The other day I was waiting in the return line at Wal-Mart with Danny, and the older lady behind me asked how old he was. We started chatting about how many kids I had, and how many she had (3, who are all grown). Her parting words to me were, “DON’T BLINK! This time with your kids will be over before you know it. I swear mine were just the same size yesterday.” So many people tell me this that it is permanently running through my mind. I try to appreciate every day with my kids and how cute they are at this age – even when they are driving me nuts. Because it really is true! Where does the time go?? Jacob turned 5 last week (FIVE!) – and I swear he JUST looked like this:

And now he looks like this! OK well, minus the crazy hair. Nowadays he frequently tells us, “Mom, Dad – I already know that.” On the morning of his birthday I said, “Jake, now you have 5 fingers!” (holding up my hand to show him how many years). His reply (while laughing and looking at me like I was just slightly retarded) – “Mom, I already had 5 fingers!” He’s a sharp one, let me tell you. And maybe it’s just me, but I seriously think he is one of the cutest dang kids I’ve ever seen. His little facial expressions are just to die for. I’m so proud of my big boy and love him so much. He is growing up too fast.

We celebrated his big day with a little family birthday party – complete with the best dinner ever – pizza, Oscar’s breadsticks, and root beer floats. After opening a few presents, we went to Target so Jake could pick out some toys with the money his grandparents sent. We all had a pretty fun time cruising the aisles and playing with all sorts of cool stuff. We finished up the night with a ghost cake (which I thought turned out pretty cute, considering I totally made it up as I went along and have never done anything like it in my life), ice cream, and 5 candles.

To top it all off – the whole fam woke up and went straight to Disneyland the next morning. It was hot and crowded, but we still had a great time. Jake even decided that he was now a good age to try Splash Mountain for the first time. And of course, Danny followed right along. They have been pretending to ride Splash Mountain ever since. I think that means they liked it.

Moving along now, I need a moment to vent. WHEN IS THIS HEAT EVER GOING TO END?? It’s almost November and it’s supposed to be 93 degrees tomorrow! UGH. I’m so ready for fall/winter. I got pregnant in this season so I wouldn’t have to wear shorts and swimsuits. Speaking of the joys of pregnancy – today I was at the gym for about an hour and a half, during which I had to use the bathroom FOUR TIMES! That’s about once every 23 minutes if anyone is keeping track. That must be some sort of record.

I LUF U 2.

Lately I’ve been feeling fat, flabby, and moody. Not to mention terrified that my legs will look like that of an overweight 80 year-old woman by the time I’m done having kids (thank you varicose veins). And it’s not that I don’t think my kids are worth the sacrifice – they totally are. (See adorable love note from Jake, using his new found spelling abilities.) But really, is it too much to ask that every mother gets a $10,000 credit when they are done having kids to use towards cosmetic surgery – to fix whatever needs fixing?? I think not.

If it will make you feel any better, I can write you “luf” notes like this.

I totally agree with the cosmetic surgery credit! Although I think each mom should be paid $10,000 per kid. It gets worse after each one and you realize how much has to really be done to get back to where you started!!!

Awesome ghost cake!! My kids love to have cakes in shapes and decorated…but I have never attempted a ghost before!

Jake is SO stinking cute! Maybe Maddie will go on a mission and when Jake gets home from his they’ll be ready to tie the knot! Wouldn’t that be cool? She’s a few months older than him but I don’t think they’d mind! That picture of him in the wig is SUCH a NEF face!! He always look like Brent, but that face is SO NEF! And I adore his spelling of love! My kids have both spelled it “L-U-V” and the “L-U-F” just melted my heart! And Props on the cake!! It looks GREAT!!!

I love that post! i totally agree with the $10,000 toward cosmetic surgery. I’m in need of a tummy tuck after just having one…i can’t imagine what i’m going to look like after 3 or 4! Geesh! But, I’m sure you look fabulous! I’m sorry I didn’t call while in town…but we were only there for 2 days- so we were kinda rushing all over to see all the sights! When are you coming to UT next? We really should get together! Thanks for the blog comments…I also love yours with your awesome family picture at the top! So Cute! Is that photographer the same one who took the photo of the Nie family who were in the plane crash?

Loved the birthday news on Jake. Cute, cute pictures. Cake looked great. Great writing–as usual. Thank you Grandma Johnson (Beda) and Grandma (Eleanor) for the vericose veins. They are fixable. Your kids come just as they are. Enjoy.

    Love, Mom

Tami, you are right, pregnancy is so worth it. In the end that is. I totally agree with the $10,000 credit thing. It is so hard for me to gain so much weight and feel cute while doing it. I am so happy that I am finally on the road to losing it rather than packing it on. Having number two has been so fun. I bet you are excited for your number three. And, it’s a girl!
