A Little Help?

Hey readers. I need a favor. I’ve been shopping around for a new little digital camera and can’t decide what to get. There are so many choices I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. Brent got a big new fancy camera, and now I need to replace the “little” Canon that we’ve had for almost 7 years – I think it was one of the first digital cameras on the market. Pretty cool at the time, but now a complete dinosaur. Very clunky and slow. It still works though, and has been a trusty little camera. Definitely a good brand.

Anyways – my criteria is this: takes really sharp, clear, and nice-color pictures; easy to use; sleek and compact (I want to be able to take it in my pocket or around in my purse without any issues); takes decent live video clips; and preferably under $200. Do you have a camera that you love or hate? Please share! I need to know exact models and what you do/don’t like. The recent models I’ve been eying are the Casio Exilim 8MP and the Canon Power Shot SD1100IS 8 MP Elph. Any opinions?

Help me out so I can help my husband out – this will be his Christmas present for me. That being said, I’m really not too picky. I realize that any newer camera is going to be a vast improvement over my old one. But still – who doesn’t want the best their money can buy? Now, here’s to stimulating the economy… Thanks!

    Kurt & I love our Canons…but mine is pretty old (Canon Power Shot A40 I think?), but still takes great pictures. Kurt has a professional level–Canon EOS D5 that he loves. I don’t think we’d sway from Canon…but that’s us. Well…Nikon’s are good too.

    We have a Canon PowerShot SD750 Elph that we bought from Costco a little under a year ago and I really, really like it. It has the bigger viewing window, takes great videos, and is pretty user friendly. I love the size too. It sits in the bottom of my purse without any probs and yes, will fit in your back pocket. I’m sure it fits your price range too. Merry Christmas a month early! 🙂

    Danny bought us a nice little canon powershot sd750 (digital elph) last year for Christmas. It was a great camera until he accidentally dropped it on the tile floor. (Three weeks later…) So he replaced that with a sony cybershot dsc-w120 (carl zeiss 7.2 megapixels- I don’t know if all this is important…). It is a great camera. It’s what we use for all our photo needs and I think it does a good job (especially considering all of the hands that want to hold it.). Good luck!

    I bought an Olympus Stylus 840 in the spring. I absolutely love it!! I don’t remember how much it cost….but I’m pretty sure it was between $200 and $300. This one is perfect for my pocket and I have been really happy with the pictures that I have gotten from it. Good luck!!

    We love our Casio Exilim. We’ve had it for 2 years and it takes pretty good pictures and we use it all the time for movies.

    i don’t have any suggestions… but thanks for letting Brent stay the night instead of flying right back, it was fun having him. I’m sure he doesn’t want to go back to being a bachelor!

    We have the kodak easyshare, I bought it because it was a good price (around $170) and it was probably the most user friendly of all the small digital cameras out there. I like it a lot, but word to the wise… buy the insurance, I have broken 2 of them now because they are so tiny and droppable.

    I am in favor of the not so tiny cameras (you know the ones that are flat and just about a CM wide). Because… the thin ones are too tiny to hold and manipulate easily. Imagine trying to get your baby to smile and look this way while trying to take the photo with just a fingertips (or Brent’s larger fingertips). Also, I am a little old fashioned in that I like a viewfinder (the hole you look through) just in case there is bright sun or too much glare to see your screen to take the shot. We love the Canon we got last year, but the software isn’t very user friendly. You are better at computers than me though! We always check out Consumer Reports before buying a camera. The holiday issue should have cameras. Check Barnes N Noble.

    We have the casio exilim and I am not a big fan at all.It seems like it takes forever for the picture to take, so by the time it actually works the kids are already looking the other way. We had the cannon elph before though and I loved it. I would like to get a new one now instead of the casio.

    We really like Nikon. We have a Nikon S550 and really like it. It has an option for black/white, sephia, color, enhanced color, and a blueish purple color–pictures! I love this! It has been really easy to use and has taken great pictures. It is a great portable camera and I take mine everywhere. We bought ours in April for $230 but I have seen in advertised now for $150-175. Good luck with your camera hunt!
