Busy!

14835

I’ve neglected the blog a bit because we’ve been busy around here with baby, boys, end of school activities, beginning of summer stuff, and planning a family reunion. Since the last post, Lindsay turned 4 months old. Already? She is getting so big! I took her in for her check up and the doctor couldn’t believe how much taller she had grown. In his words, her height skyrocketed. She went from about the 30th percentile to the 90th. Maybe not quite so petite after all? Her weight gain finally has picked up a bit too – but she is only in the 35th percentile there. Brent is hoping she’ll be six feet tall. He thinks tall girls are hot.  Not to mention they are good at basketball.:) All I can say is if LJ inherited Brent’s tall, skinny, and long leg gene – combined with her blonde hair and blue eyes… YIKES! But seriously – isn’t she the cutest? She rolls over now, grabs her toes, and LOVES to blow spit bubbles and make zerbert sounds. I love love love my little girl.

And wow – my first baby is now officially a FIRST GRADER. So weird. Jake graduated from kindergarten with flying colors and we are so proud of him. He was the youngest boy in his class – but still excelled in all areas and really impressed his teacher. And most importantly he was well behaved; Mrs. Flores said he was a pleasure to have in class. Music to a mothers’ ears. Next year will be a new adventure – sadly Jake’s school was forced to close because of budget cuts. He will be going to a different school in the fall – but he is excited and we know he will do well. Danny will also be starting pre-school in the fall and can’t wait to carry a backpack and pick out his own lunch box.

By far the best thing about budget cuts is all the free loot we’ve inherited! For about a week, Jake came home with board games, colored pencils, markers, and toys. Then – to top it all off, a few days before school got out they started putting these big metal carts out in the front of the school every afternoon that said “FREE BOOKS”. The library was being cleaned out and all the kids went nuts. It was like a feeding frenzy. I couldn’t even make my way through the crowds to snatch up a few. But the last day Brent and I were there early for Jake’s little graduation ceremony and checked him out about a half hour before school let out. JACKPOT! All the goods were out and nobody had picked them over yet. And this was the last day – so there was A LOT of stuff. And not just books – but tons of learning type toys and activities too.

Well… we couldn’t help but go a little crazy. It got to the point where we made a few separate piles so we wouldn’t look too conspicuous. We even hid about half the books in the bottom of the baby’s stroller. We got so much stuff I had to have Brent bring the van around to load up the back. Call us hogs if you want – but look at all the awesome stuff we got! Tons of hardback books – good ones too! Classics and lots of Newbery Award winners. Four containers full of all sorts of blocks and shape games, two big dry erase boards, a big clock to learn how to tell time, a scale, measuring tapes, puppets, etc. The boys haven’t stopped playing with everything since we brought it home.

But it’s onto summer now where we’ve started swim lessons for both boys and have implemented what could possibly be my BEST IDEA EVER. After a bad week where the boys were fighting a lot, complaining, whining, talking back, etc. we were trying to a figure out a way to motivate them and reward good behavior. This is what I came up with: Behavior Buckets. Each boys has a big clear bucket with a hole cut in the lid. They pick something ahead of time they want to earn – this time it’s a trip to the cheap movie theater to see Monsters vs. Aliens. Every time me or Brent catch them doing something good they get to put a ping pong ball in their bucket. If they do something bad – we take a ping pong ball out. Once their bucket is full – they get their reward.

Simple – but GENIUS. I love this system because IT WORKS! The boys have been so good and really have gone out of their way to help mom, share, do chores, talk nicely, help the baby, etc. They think it is so fun filling up their buckets – and have a complete melt down if they lose a ball. I love that we can use it over and over again, as opposed to a sticker chart or something. Granted, dozens of ping pong balls got a little bit more pricey than stickers – but so far it has been worth every penny! Plus, if we ever invest in a ping pong table – we are set!

The other thing we are loving about this system is that it has somehow improved Mom and Dad’s behavior too. We notice all the good things our kids do instead of constantly complaining about the bad. This equals a much happier house. It’s amazing the difference it makes when you set out to recognize the positive instead of punish the negative. Our buckets are half full instead of half empty.

Major parenting (and life?) lesson… learned.

Oh, I need to remember the behavior balls. Such a great idea!

And you totally scored on the books, etc. I am insanely jealous. I guess you deserve it for having to transfer your kid to a different school next year!

cute idea….may have to steal it 🙂 I like how visual it is for them. Although I think Luke and Tryg would just want to play with all the balls.

There is another plus with the BB’s (for behavior balls)… You haven’t really lived until you can threaten your boys with “losing their balls”.

FYI, in reality I think that we have only taken away 1 ball from both boys, but it’s a much more effective stick/carrot than spanking/praise.

I can’t believe the school just GAVE that stuff away!!! We might have to come to the Nef library to borrow some books! And I LOVE the ping pong ball jar idea…I agree….my dad laughs at sticker charts and stuff like that because he thinks it IS for the parents to recognize more of the good their kids do. Hey–it works!

Tam- Just spent the last little bit updating myself on your busy life…it has been a long time since I visited your blog! You look GREAT by the way. I am not looking forward to the long nights and LOTS of laundry. It is too bad we don’t live closer. You make me laugh!!! Are you going to the ten year reunion? I still haven’t decided. Let me know. Email me because I never check my blog!

That ping pong ball idea is amazing! I’ll totally have to copy that when Jacksy gets older! And…I’m jealous about all the books and goodies you got! I totally would have grabbed as much as possible!

I can’t believe four months have gone by already. That is so crazy. I’m feeling you with getting behind on the blog. It’s hard this time of year.

We were talking with Chris and Andrea that we should do a college reunion with the families and take the kids to Disneyland. Wouldn’t that be so fun. The plans are in the works probably next year sometime. Or maybe sooner 🙂

Hey, love the balls idea. Where did you get the plastic jars? Where were the cheapest ping-pong balls? I am totally copying this idea. We have had WAY too much fighting and whining at my house. I would much rather be the rewarder than the reforee.
