Today was Mother’s Day. Here’s what I got: a sleep in, breakfast in bed actually made by the kids, two bouquets of flowers, a heart shaped Lego “cake,” a coupon from Danny for “being nice to Jake,” a hand-drawn, framed portrait of myself saying “I Am The Coolest Mom,” a flower shaped magnet with Danny’s face in the middle, cinnamon pop tarts, lemonade girl scout cookies, and peanut M&M’s. Score.
Brent also cooked me up some really good burgers and fries on the grill, and then had the boys help him make Pioneer Woman’s freaking delicious chocolate sheet cake [edit: 2024.12.27 – current] for dessert. YUM. It was heaven. In the form of soft and chewy chocolate cake. And I didn’t have to do any dishes. Thanks to my little family for a lovely day. The only thing that would’ve made it better is if Lindsay weren’t home sick with the flu. Poor sweet girl wanted to be her happy peppy self, but just couldn’t quite pull it off. I feel pretty lucky to be the mom to these cute kids though.

And especially to this budding superhero. Seriously, how awesome are these pics? Love little Iron Girl.

Now, let’s rewind a few weeks — you know where the perfect place to go for Easter is? VEGAS.
Well ok, if a bunch of your family happens to be congregating there it is.
We crashed my sister Susi’s (thankfully BIG) pad and met up for the weekend with my parents and with my little brother Ted and his wife Megan. Teddy and Meg live way far away in Canada now and so we never see them anymore. 🙁 Teddy is half way through law school out in Michigan and Megan is a full time nurse. They are awesome. And I miss them. That’s why we made the quick random Easter trip. Megan is so cute, and fun, and easy to talk to. And Tedward is my bosom brother. Ha. I just made that up.

What I mean is we are only a year apart, grew up with everyone thinking we were twins, and were actually the best of friends through high school and college. My mom still brags that we never fought. Except for when we were little and I almost killed him in the pool a few times, and when he nearly shoved me to my death off the trampoline. But other than that we did ok. I remember sharing bunk beds with him until I was like 8. I used to be too scared to get up and close the big scary closet in the dark… so I would tell him (like seriously every night) “Teddy, if you get up and close the closet I’ll give you a quarter in the morning.” And he would do it every time. And I never once gave him a quarter.
Sucker.
Or maybe he was just being nice. I wouldn’t be surprised…

Anyways – it was a fun weekend getting to hang out with everyone. We swam, tanned, talked, played games, and inhaled a lot of candy. One of the highlights was sitting with Brent, Ted, and Megan in Gospel Doctrine on Sunday and playing a sort of Pictionary “Name that Movie” game with the kids’ little magna doodle. It reminded me of younger days. Totally irreverent, but totally fun. You can tell Ted and I grew up in the same house and that our brains work the same, cuz we would guess each other’s faster than anyone else could even begin to figure it out… even with my horrible drawings. Good times.

Also fun: hiring my nieces Abbie and Sydney to babysit all the little kids while the adults went to Cafe Rio for dinner. YUM. And so nice to be together with everyone (without 37 screaming children in the mix). Brent will tell you HIS highlight was discovering Nielson’s, next door to Cafe Rio – this AH-MAZING frozen custard place. He is still talking about it.

Our kids had a blast playing with Susi and Adam’s kids. They play so well together, we hardly saw them all weekend. Jake and Joseph are like the same person, as are Danny and James. In age, stature, looks, and personality. It’s weird. And Lindsay was in little girl heaven with 3 year old twins Lucy and Ella (plus all their toys) to toddle around with. Hooray for cousins!

Easter featured a visit from the Easter bunny, two different Easter egg hunts, church, pictures, and a delicious ham and cheesy potato dinner. It was a great weekend. Thanks Susi for hosting us and thanks everybody that came out for the visit. Wish we could all get together more often!
