Outnumbered

Since we will be out of town so much this summer, my big ultrasound wasn’t scheduled until almost 22 weeks along. Well, that was just unacceptable. I didn’t think I could possibly wait that long (I’m 16 weeks now) to find out whether this baby was a boy or girl. Plus, we really wanted to bring all the kids along – so we up and paid $45 to go to the fancy 3D ultrasound place down the street. Which was totally worth it. Huge screen, the kids were AMAZED, had the best time, and after a lot of cajoling the baby finally decided to show his bits.

That’s right. HIS. It’s a boy.

The score will be three to one.

I’m not going to lie. I really wanted another girl. I cried on the way home. And a little bit later on. For several reasons…

Lindsay has quite possibly been the cutest, happiest, and most pleasant child on the planet. I really wanted another like her. And another to play dress up with and do all those girly things that I have loved so much. She has been very different from the boys. I also REALLY wanted a sister/playmate for her. I wanted another girl teenager (crazy as it sounds, I LIKE teenagers) to be buddies with and do all the girl teenager stuff – hair, clothes, PROM. You know. I also had a ton of cute little girl clothes ready to go…

And my fear of another boy goes like this: Our boys are to the sweaty, stinky stage. Which I’m sure will last until they leave home. This scares me. As do the bathrooms. Also frightening – their food consumption. And the fact that when they are teenagers they most likely will hardly talk to me, then move out, get married, and hardly talk to me again. Sad. But sorta true, right? Boys are just different. Plus, I have NO cute boy clothes left. And not a fortune to go baby shopping all over again. *Sigh*

AND I now have to re-think the whole room situation at our house and where I want to put everyone and possibilities for the future. I REALLY don’t want to have to give up my pretty guest room any time soon… silly and selfish maybe, but the truth.

AND does this now mean their might be FIVE little Nef’s one day? Time will tell I guess…

BUT – after a short pity party, a good pep talk from my mom (always), and some TLC from my husband (who KNEW it was a boy all along…) I felt much better. I do love my boys. And I make cute boys. And I’m happy to have at least one girl. And I’m LUCKY to have all these babies, period. And I know I will love this one unconditionally as soon as he’s in my arms… I already do.

Now we just have to agree on a name for our new little man. We had a few girl names ready to go, but Brent and I are at odds on the boy names… so this could be interesting. The good news is we finally settled on a nickname. We went through like four possibles, but nothing ever stuck – until yesterday.

Baby Pechanga. As soon as I said it, there was no question. Bingo.

I just had to let you know that I make an awesome baby boy onesie! You can bet you will be the recipient of one regardless of if you have a shower or not.

You know what? I wanted a girl when I was pregnant with Henry. When we had the ultrasound, I was disappointed to find out it was a boy. I kinda figured it would be the last kid and really wanted a girl. But as the time drew near, and we were preparing for the birth I realized I really wanted that boy! In fact, I remember telling Rick, “what if they were wrong? what if it was a glitch in the ultrasound? what if it’s a girl? I don’t want a girl, I want a boy!”

Of course, I have to say, I still want that girl. Grandkids?

i totally understand your whole thought process there… miss you and hope you get a pleasant easy baby/toddler no matter what the gender is…. it can happen, right? my third girl was/is by far my easiest. my girls got nightmarish at ages 3 and 4, but izzy stayed sweet. sometimes it’s hard not to love one of your children more than the others 🙂 especially when the others pooped in their underwear a lot and said many hateful things and the other one just wants to cuddle and tell you how much they love you all the time 🙂

Congrats on a boy, I know how you feel. I cried after i found out Ryan was a boy. I was happy Lacy was a girl and she has turned out to be 10x harder than Ryan. Now i am kinda hoping for a boy( me thinking cause Lacy is hard maybe its a girl thing, guess not though). So maybe you will get a nice sweet boy 🙂 And you totally need a shower, we will make sure you get all the cute new boy stuff!

Danny by the way – is THRILLED. While everyone else kinda wanted a girl, he REALLY wanted a boy. He was stuck on having a little brother. Glad for him that he got his wish. 🙂

Ya know what, I’ve thought that several of our kids “should have” been the opposite gender for what seemed to me really good reasons! But like you said, in the end you love them no matter what and you couldn’t imagine them any differently. Congrats! You guys really DO make super cute boys! (but I’m not gonna lie, having 3 boys in a row on the tail end of my brood is pretty frightening for me to think about sometimes too!)

I know this exact feeling. We had a different situation but I was sad for a little after finding out Wren wasn’t getting a sister. But it’s only a matter of time before you can’t imagine him as anything besides a bouncing baby boy, even if happens in the hospital. 😉

I hope you get a hardcore mama’s boy. Because there is nothing better.

Oh, Tami! Reading your post was like reliving when I found out my 4th was a boy when I was 100% certain we were having a girl. I had 2 boys and then our girl and I couldn’t imagine another boy when I had so many adorable cute girl clothes and had already given away 95% of my boy clothes. We ended up doing an addition to our house to help our bedroom situation once we had our boy because we were out of rooms! All of your points I completely felt and many people can attest I was pretty grumpy about having a boy until I held him in my arms when he was born and I’ve been whipped with him ever since. Like you said, you make some pretty adorable boys and this one will be just as cute 🙂
