Just Keep Swimming

I can’t let this blog die! Even if Google Reader dies. And even if it’s been 3 months since my last post. Something is better than nothing, right? It makes me sad to think of these precious (aka exhausting) years while our kids are still little slipping by unnoticed and undocumented except for the random pics and one liners contributed to the black hole that is Facebook and Instagram. Need… more… content.

So let’s dive right in…

Lindsay turned four on Feb. 11th. She wanted a Sleeping Beauty cake. For pulling it together the hour before her little party (with one of her toy princesses) I was pretty proud of myself. And the best part – she LOVED it. And she loved everything about her low key birthday dinner with TWO (so excited to have two) grandmas there to help celebrate. Grandma Cox and Great Grandma Finlayson. She requested Grandma make homemade mac n cheese – yum! – plus lots of veggies, salad, and rolls. We dined on pink paper princess plates and cups, which she adored, had pink balloons, purple pancakes for breakfast, and lots of pink and purple presents. She got lots of dresses (her favorite thing), purses, swimsuits, and her twinsie princess Rapunzel doll, plus matching Rapunzel nightgown. All of which she happily modeled for everyone. It was a great day all the way around. I just love Lindsay’s birthdays – she looks forward to them (and talks about them) ALL year.

Other January/February happenings:

  • Joshy got his first hair cut (by mom). The curly baby mullet was getting out of control and he was looking a little too Chris Farley/fat guy in a little coat.
  • Lindsay got her first bouquet of flowers. From her Dad of course – for Valentine’s day. She was thrilled.
  • Danny made a killer “Love Machine” mailbox to collect his Valentine’s in from school.
  • Went to Jake’s Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet ON Valentine’s night. Western themed. Which made for a fun, wacky, and surprisingly delicious family date night. Who needs romance when you have pulled pork and a husband in a pink plaid cowboy shirt?
  • Hit the beach a few times for some awesome So Cal winter weather. Josh LOVES the beach. He loves the sand, the water, everything. And I am relaxed enough fourth time around that I just let him run around, stomp all over my towel, rummage through my friends’ food, eat sand, rub it in his hair and all over his face, and then drop his food in it, pick it up, and keep right on eating.
  • Danny begged to bring Josh to school for show and tell for the assigned topic: Someone I Love. So cute. Both Jake and Danny firmly believe Joshy to be the “cutest little boy in the whole world.”
  • Boys finished up their first basketball season. They learned a lot and had a good team. We are currently enjoying NO sports. Which has been a really nice break.

March haps:

  • Took some super cute St. Patrick’s Day family photos after church and on our own front porch. Happy miracle!
  • Josh gets bigger and bigger (27 pounds at 15 months) and more rowdy and mobile by the minute. He runs all over the house with his pot belly hanging over his pants, grunting and throwing things, scattering toys everywhere, slamming cupboards, and his favorite: tackling his siblings, wrestling, “tickling” (which sometimes translates into pinching and biting :/), and playing chase. He doesn’t have to talk much with so many older siblings catering to his every need. But he does say Mama, Dada, yay!, NO, more, and possibly milk? and ball?. He used to say HI – but we haven’t heard that word for awhile. He does wave hello and goodbye to everyone though – which is the cutest. He also gives high fives and kisses and hugs on command. He LOVES his big brothers and cries by the door every day when they go to school. He has to have a bowl or plate and utensils just like the big kids now or he refuses to eat. And his little tantrums are the cutest funniest thing you’ve ever seen. He regularly gets into the downward dog position with his butt in the air and his head on the ground when he is upset and crying and frustrated. The entire family is obsessed with him. I really don’t want him to get any bigger. I just adore him! 1 to 2 years old has been my favorite age with all of my kids. He is just a great big barrel of fun.
  • Jake won his Cub Scout Pack Space Derby. Pretty awesome considering we spent an hour max on his space ship and really didn’t know what we were doing. Beginner’s luck! He was so pumped. Loved the name for his ship too – Apollo 334 (his pack number).
  • Danny started some early speech intervention at school – almost 8 years old and still can’t say his R’s. Thankfully he thinks it’s really fun.
  • Visited Grandma and Grandpa Cox in Utah for Easter and a week of our Spring Break. Their massive projection screen, fully stocked soda fridge, homemade patty melts and fries, and crazy cold storage room full of food never fails to impress (or add five pounds). Ok – Cafe Rio, Brick Oven, Krispy Kreme, and movie popcorn may have contributed as well. 😉 Watched the BYU Spring scrimmage game, spent an afternoon touring Temple Square with the kids (awesome!), played a lot with cousins and sibs in Grandma and Grandpa’s great backyard, attempted more family pics, and went on a few free dates (thanks Mom!) with my hubs – one a much needed date to the Mt. Timpanogas temple which is only 7 blessed minutes away.

My boyfriend Brent is still skinny and cute and tall – playing basketball 3 to 4 times a week. Nerdy as ever – reading several books a week, learning new computer languages for “fun”. And diligently going to work every day (at the insane hour of 5:30 am) – which allows me to be home ALL DAY picking up the same messes 647 times each day and playing referee to our constantly bickering children. Who alternate between rolling their eyes at me, studiously ignoring me, screaming I’m the meanest mom in the world, and blaming me for every inconvenience in their difficult lives – but then in the same day fight over who gets to sit next to me on the couch, pick me flowers for my hair, and give me hugs and kisses and tell me “I love you too” and “You’re being a good mama.”

Thank goodness children forgive easily and are easy to forgive!! I hope I am doing something right. Parenting is not for the feint of heart.:)

Till next time! Whenever that might be. #justkeepswimmingjustkeepswimming
